I made this screen print last month at East London Printmakers in Mile End. It is a print of one of my paintings (Mug, Plate and Teacloth). This was an experiment to see how it would look to make screen prints of the subjects I paint, to see if I could make a still life with this very graphic process, using only a limited amount of colours.

There were 5 separate screens used to print this image: yellow, green, brown, blue and red. It was an interesting process breaking down the painting into its essential components, discarding any unnecessary parts but still trying to maintain whatever the original image was trying to convey and not really knowing how it was going to come out.

I produced a series of 10, with a lot of other test pieces. Once everything had been set up, this happened very quickly, so it is the complete opposite of making an oil painting, where you spend weeks working towards one image; however, with screen printing, you don’t have the option to grab a brush and add an area of colour or make a spontaneous adjustment, once you have made your screen thats it.
